Bringing Soccer to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall: Creating Opportunities Through the Game
626 Futbl Coaching Staff with Dr. Corral and Facility Staff
One of the most unique experiences we've had this year was the opportunity to bring 626 Futbl to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, California.
Some of our coaches were invited to the facility to introduce a group of students to soccer through a training session. For us, this was about more than just teaching the sport. It was an opportunity to bring something new to the facility, create a positive experience for the students, and show how soccer can be used as a tool to connect and inspire people from all different backgrounds.
Introducing the Game
We worked with two separate groups of players, giving each group the opportunity to participate in a soccer training session.
For some of the players, soccer was a completely new experience. It was exciting to see how quickly they picked up the sport and began understanding the basics of the game.
Our coaches focused on creating a session that was active, competitive, and most importantly, fun. As the players became more comfortable, their competitive side started to come out. They challenged each other, stayed focused, and took the session seriously.
Seeing that level of engagement was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
The players weren't simply going through the motions. They were learning, competing, and genuinely enjoying themselves.
More Than Just a Training Session
What made this experience unique was being able to bring soccer into an environment where many of the students may not normally have access to opportunities like this.
We believe that every young person deserves the chance to discover a sport, develop a new skill, and experience the positive things that come from being part of a team.
Soccer can teach much more than technical skills.
It teaches communication, discipline, competitiveness, teamwork, confidence, and how to work toward a common goal. For us, creating an environment where the players could experience those things was the most important part of the day.
Building Relationships Beyond the Field
After the training session, the facility staff treated the players to burgers, giving our coaches an opportunity to sit down with them and have more personal conversations.
Getting to interact with the players outside of the training environment allowed us to learn more about them as individuals and build a different type of connection.
These conversations reinforced why opportunities like this are so important. Sometimes, simply having someone come in, spend time with you, and show that they believe in your potential can make a lasting impact.
We want every player to understand that they are capable of accomplishing great things. With the right support, opportunities, and belief in themselves, there is no limit to what they can achieve.
Looking Toward the Future
We want to give a special thank you to Dr. Jesus Corral for inviting us to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and helping coordinate the opportunity.
We are grateful that he trusted us to bring our coaches and our program into the facility, and we hope this is the beginning of a long-term partnership.
We believe this type of partnership can be beneficial for everyone involved. The facility has an opportunity to provide its students with new activities and experiences, while we have the opportunity to reach young people who may not otherwise have access to our programs.
Most importantly, we get to continue doing what we believe in:
Using soccer to create opportunities, build relationships, and inspire young people—no matter where they come from.
We hope to return to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and continue developing programs that give these students opportunities to learn, compete, and discover something new.
Because sometimes, all it takes is being given the opportunity to play. ⚽️
