Youth Summer Pickup Soccer
This summer, we were excited to host eight free pickup soccer sessions for players ages 9–15 at La Puente Park, creating a consistent space for kids to stay active and connected throughout summer break. The sessions were held once a week, giving players something to look forward to while school was out.
All pickup games were led by local college-athletes who understand the value of play and community. The focus was simple: foster a fun, competitive environment where players could learn through the game itself. We strongly believe that one of the best ways to improve is by playing as much as possible, especially in an environment with less structure where creativity and self-expression are encouraged.
Unlike traditional practices or team games, our pickup sessions allowed players to try new skills, take risks, and play freely without fear of mistakes. We encouraged them to be creative, express themselves, and attempt things they might not normally try during structured team sessions. That freedom is where confidence grows and love for the game deepens.
Each session welcomed 20–30 local players, and the energy was consistently high. We loved seeing new friendships form, competitive moments unfold, and players push themselves while still having fun.
To wrap up each session, the players competed for a spot in the “winning team picture” for Instagram, posing with their best champion celebrations and ending the day with smiles all around.
We truly enjoyed hosting these summer pickup games and providing more opportunities for kids in our community to play the sport they love. We’re already looking forward to bringing them back next summer and continuing to build spaces where the game stays fun, creative, and accessible.
